Keeping hearing aids working

Most hearing aid problems are not faults. They are moisture, wax and dead batteries, and the accessories here address all three.

Moisture is the biggest one. Hearing aids spend the day in a warm, humid ear canal, and condensation collects inside the casing overnight. An electric dehumidifier like the Tørr dryer box draws that moisture out while you sleep — the single most effective thing you can do to extend the life of an aid.

Wax and debris come next. A cleaning kit with a brush, wax loop and vent pick clears the sound outlet and microphone ports. Blocked ports are the usual reason an aid suddenly sounds quiet or muffled.

Batteries are simple but easy to get wrong. Zinc-air cells are colour-coded by size, so check the tab colour on your current pack before ordering; size 312 (brown) and size 13 (orange) are the most common.

Buying once? Buy the dryer box. Restocking? Buy batteries in bulk — sealed zinc-air cells keep for years.
